Hougang / Northeast
Singapore's very last surviving traditional kampong (village) — wooden houses, vegetable gardens and free-ranging chickens in the middle of suburban HDB estates. Extraordinary and fragile.
💡 Approach respectfully — residents still live here. Walk quietly, don't enter private areas. Incredibly photogenic.

The former Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) railway line converted into a 24 km green corridor. The old stations and bridges are hauntingly beautiful and full of Singapore-Malaysia history.
💡 Best entered from Buona Vista end or Tanjong Pagar station. Flat and easy — good for cycling.

Where the British surrendered to Japan in 1942 — now a sobering WWII museum with artefacts, oral histories and the actual surrender room preserved exactly as it was.

A hilltop WWII museum dedicated to the Malay Regiment who made their last stand here in 1942. Beautifully restored black-and-white colonial bungalow with incredible forested views.
💡 The walk up the hill through secondary forest is part of the experience. Very quiet — rarely crowded.

A quiet lane of perfectly preserved Peranakan townhouses hidden behind Orchard Road — pastel colours, carved wooden shutters, and absolute silence just 50 metres from the crowds.
💡 Walk the whole length of Emerald Hill. Pop into 5&Dime (cocktail bar) for a drink afterwards.

The most bizarre attraction in Singapore — a free theme park of grotesque Chinese mythological dioramas commissioned by the Tiger Balm founders in 1937. Uniquely strange and utterly fascinating.
💡 The 10 Courts of Hell is the most famous (and disturbing) section. Combine with Labrador Nature Reserve nearby.

A brutalist 1980s shopping complex packed floor-to-ceiling with art supply shops, second-hand bookshops, music stalls and framing studios. One of Singapore's most unique retail experiences.
💡 Floor 3–4 have the best secondhand book deals. The art supply shops have incredible variety at low prices.

Singapore's most historic hill — home to ancient Majapahit royalty, a Christian cemetery and the WWII Battlebox command centre bunker where the fateful surrender decision was made.
